Steam Deck & Controller Guide

Stellar Jockeys is blunt: Early Access launches with keyboard and mouse as the strongly recommended path. Controllers and Steam Deck can function, but some binds may be missing or awkward, and inventory plus Armory work fights twin-stick habits. This page helps Deck and gamepad players survive without lying about the intended experience. Cross-read Controls, System Requirements, and Getting Started.

Official stance for Early Access

At EA launch the game is Windows-first on Steam, GOG, and Itch. Dedicated Linux support comes later; Deck users often rely on Steam’s compatibility layer with varying results. Inside the game, open SETTINGS → BINDS/CONTROLLER and remap everything that feels dead. If the fight pace overwhelms you, drop GAME SPEED under SETTINGS → GENERAL toward 50% while you learn. Confirm launch timing and OS notes on Release Date and official links.

Mouse-and-keyboard remains the design center: relative aim on foot, precise inventory clicks, and pad interactions that expect a cursor. Pads are a backup cockpit, not a parity promise.

What breaks on pads

  • Precise relative aim and inventory drag-and-drop.
  • Fast Armory transfers and Fabricator confirmations.
  • Cursor-based interact highlights when the stick drifts.
  • Mount and hardpoint menus that want fine pointer work—see Mount Weapons.

Community Steam Input layouts exist for the demo app and will likely appear for the full app after August 20, 2026. Treat them as starting points. Rebind Interact, Inventory, Sprint, Prone, Stance, and weapon select first. Then bind a dedicated Cancel or Back so menus do not trap you mid-fight.

  1. Dock with mouse and keyboard for Garage economy nights—Scrapper, Fabricator, gantry parking, and Merchant prep belong on a desk.
  2. Use Deck handheld only for short combat drills after binds feel stable.
  3. Keep game speed reduced until morale-era accuracy feels readable—see Enemy Morale.
  4. Avoid Merchant Causeway on a fresh pad layout; practice on easy salvage first.
  5. After each session, write which binds still fight you and fix them before the next sortie.

Steam Input and community layouts

On Steam Deck, open the Quick Access menu → Controller settings → browse community layouts for Brigador Killers or the demo app. Prefer layouts that map:

  • Right stick to mouse aim or gyro aim if available.
  • A clear Interact on a face button.
  • Inventory on a shoulder you will not fat-finger while aiming.
  • Sprint and prone on distinct inputs.

Gyro can help isometric aim more than raw stick alone. If gyro drifts, recalibrate before a Merchant attempt. Do not stack three overlapping Steam configs—pick one base and tune.

Linux and Deck honesty

Unofficial Proton or WINE success stories exist, but mileage varies by driver stack and Deck OS version. Do not buy Early Access solely for Deck comfort until you test the demo-class feel on your hardware. Track OS notes after patches on patch notes. Mac remains unexpected; Linux is later.

Accessibility levers that help everyone

  • Remap any conflicting shoulder buttons away from Accidental Inventory.
  • Lower game speed before raising difficulty.
  • Use larger on-screen prompts if a future patch exposes UI scale options; until then, rely on edge highlights and default prompt placement from demo QoL updates.
  • Sit for Garage surgery; stand for short combat drills only when binds are already correct.

Day-one pad checklist

Pair this page with the EA day-one checklist. On install hour: verify files, open controller binds, set game speed, run a disposable kit, and stop before Causeway. Remember demo progress does not import—see Demo save reset and Save & Gantry Rules.

When to switch back to mouse

Switch immediately when:

  • You mis-click Fabricator recipes twice in a row.
  • You lose a vehicle because gantry parking felt imprecise.
  • Merchant crate loading fails because pad alignment is stick-wobbly.

Those are Garage surgery failures, not combat skill failures. Dock, fix the economy, then return to handheld if you still want it.

Pads are a backup cockpit. Learn the binds, slow the world, and switch to mouse when the Garage demands surgery.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Steam Deck officially supported at Early Access launch?

Not as a first-class promise. Windows mouse-and-keyboard is recommended; Deck play is possible but imperfect.

Can I remap controller buttons?

Yes. Use SETTINGS → BINDS/CONTROLLER. Also consider Steam Input community layouts as a base.

What is the game speed slider for?

Under SETTINGS → GENERAL you can lower game speed (down toward 50%) to make frantic fights readable.

Should I do Merchant runs on Deck first?

No. Master easy salvage and inventory binds before Causeway pressure.

Should Garage crafting happen on Deck?

Prefer docked mouse and keyboard for Armory, Fabricator, and gantry work. Use Deck for short combat drills after binds are stable.
